New Candle Announced

Craig Andrade from the Raconteur is the perfumer or “nose” who created this custom fragrance. He trained in France at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery and specialises in telling the story of iconic parts of Australia through scent. The Raconteur’s flagship store is 20a William Street, Paddington in Sydney. The candles are hand poured in Sydney and are made using 100% soy wax with a burn time of up to 60 hours.

Craig visited Lord Howe in January 2019 and stayed at Capella. He spent time walking trails with Dr Ian Hutton, the island’s leading conservation scholar on all things related to Lord Howe’s unique biodiversity habitat for plants and animals. Seeing the island through Ian’s eyes allowed Craig to zero in on unique native botanicals that were endemic to the island and also on those which had a compelling scent story. Craig also had the privilege of visiting a few of the island’s oldest family homes and gardens and was able to spend time taking in their unique scent offering of many, many decades of adaption to Lord Howe’s climate.

On the back of that field research Craig developed a custom fragrance that would tell the story of this unique island. While he wasn’t able to source oils directly extracted from plants on Lord Howe (due to the conservation restrictions) he was able to construct accords of those plants based on his research.
