Capella’s 20th Anniversary
‘Back in the Day’: The team at Capella reminisce on twenty years of lodging on Lord Howe.
Baillie Lodges undertook its first ever artist-in-residence program at Capella Lodge on Lord Howe this year, with celebrated artist, writer and film maker, Joshua Yeldham.
Josh and his photographer wife Jo travelled to Lord Howe in March and spent seven nights on the island as part of our inaugural residency program. This time allowed Josh to really explore the island’s incredible land and seascape, while Jo captured some wonderful shots of Josh at work.
The premise of the residency program is multi-faceted, comprising both arts and education with a focus on environmental conservation.
There is a tale of regeneration happening on this idyllic island. A story that involves the passion of the small community that has the best interest of this World Heritage listed island at its heart.
Jo YeldhamFrom his Lord Howe trip, Josh has begun work on teaching modules that educate kids (and adults!) about the processes he uses to create his artworks, to the backdrop of some of the fascinating conservation stories and insights to the endemic species which thrive in Lord Howe’s pristine natural environment.
Take a moment to watch a short film here as Josh speaks about the ideas behind the exhibition.
Josh created several artworks from his time on Lord Howe Island and together they make the foundation for his next exhibition, ‘Providence’ which will show at Sydney’s Arthouse Gallery from November 6. Josh along with his sister Ali Yeldham, who owns Arthouse Gallery, have pledged the sale proceeds from the principal artwork created during the residency – valued at $50,000 – to fund an educational project which aligns with his deep passion for nature. Joshua, together with Baillie Lodges, has selected Cool Australia as the beneficiary, a not-for-profit organisation which develops high quality online, curriculum-aligned resources for teachers on topics relating to social, environmental and economic sustainability.
Many artists feel a special connection with a particular bird or animal, and for Joshua the owl is akin to a personal totem and features in many of his works. Joshua has produced a limited-edition print featuring ‘The Owl of Lord Howe’, inspired by the endemic and now-extinct Lord Howe Island Boobook. Framed in dark wood, the print is available to purchase for $8,800. Please contact Arthouse Gallery for further information.
Joshua’s exhibition ‘Providence’ opens on November 21, 2020 at Sydney’s Arthouse Gallery. View the exhibition on the Arthouse website.
