Capella’s 20th Anniversary
‘Back in the Day’: The team at Capella reminisce on twenty years of lodging on Lord Howe.
Spring on Lord Howe Island brings new life, fresh energy – and for Capella Lodge, a whole new chapter. After a cool-season closure, we’re thrilled to reopen our island home and welcome our first guests back to experience Capella’s refreshed spaces, just in time for the beauty of spring and summer.
Before we share the latest updates, we have some very special news. After nearly 23 years leading Capella with warmth, dedication and true island spirit, our beloved lodge managers, Libby Grant and Mark McKillop, have retired.
From the moment Capella first opened its doors in 2003 as the inaugural Baillie Lodge, Libby and Mark have been its heart and soul. They nurtured the lodge as if it were their own, creating a home-away-from-home where guests returned year after year. Their legacy is woven into every corner of Capella, and we’re deeply grateful for the love and care they’ve given over the years. Happily, Libby and Mark have promised to return for cameo appearances – so you may yet see their familiar smiles again.
As one chapter closes, another begins. We’re delighted to welcome Bridie Bush and Ryan Ward as Capella’s new lodge managers. Many guests will know Bridie and Ryan from their time at our sister lodges, including the legendary Huka Lodge in New Zealand and the extraordinary Longitude 131° at Uluru-Kata Tjuta. Together, they bring a wealth of experience, energy and warmth, and we know guests will feel instantly at home in their care.
Our cool-season closure has given us time to reimagine some of Capella’s most-loved spaces. The iconic Gowers Terrace has been fully refreshed, making the most of its breathtaking views over the lagoon and mountains.
Highlights include:
A new drinks ledge, the perfect perch for morning coffee or sunset cocktails.
Expansive blackbutt decking with elegant banquettes for relaxed dining and lounging.
Stylish new outdoor furnishings by Robert Plumb and Tribu, complemented by the much-loved turquoise Gervasoni cubes.
A sparkling new Capella light installation, a tribute to our namesake constellation.
Each guest suite verandah has also been updated with fresh furnishings to echo the new look of the main terrace, creating serene outdoor spaces to relax and unwind. Join us for a first look at the reimagined Gowers Terrace by watching the reel linked here.
For guests keen to explore, we’ve introduced a new fleet of 12 e-bikes along with mountain bikes, making it easier than ever to discover the wonders of our World Heritage-listed island.
From fresh spaces to new faces, there’s so much to look forward to at Capella Lodge this season. We can’t wait to share it all with you.
Warmest wishes,
James & Hayley Baillie
